▲ 2021 Chengdu Biennale participating artist JUJUWANG

On the evening of July 8, in the academic lecture hall of Hall A of Chengdu Art Museum (Chengdu Tianfu Art Museum), artist JUJUWANG gave a lecture on the theme of “Traditional Re-Innovation” and donated the 2021 Chengdu Double Art Museum to Chengdu Art Museum on the spot. The work “Savage Growth” exhibited at the annual exhibition.

Lecture review

Innovation is the carrier and tradition is the core

Focusing on the two key words of “tradition” and “innovation”, JUJUWANG explains how to combine modern aesthetics with Chinese tradition by sharing the creative concepts and stories behind the works “Secret of the Ocean”, “Cloud House”, “Viewing the Palace” and “Gold Foil Screen ” The combination uses modern techniques to express nature and traditional culture.

At the beginning of the lecture, JUJUWANG talked about her childhood spent with forests and the sea. The pure and beautiful nature therefore became the source of inspiration for her creations. During the journey, JUJUWAANG was deeply attracted by the hidden location of Manzhao Village in Yunnan, the ancient labor customs and the unique handmade paper – “Dai paper”. After returning to Shanghai, she used Dai paper as material, fishing line and brackets to create “Cloud House”. While bringing Dai paper into the public eye, she also showed the purity of nature. The work “Secret of the Ocean” looks like a drop of water when viewed from a bird’s eye view; when walking in, one can feel the entire process of the installation changing from transparent to blue and black, as if it is gradually entering the seabed. When the acrylic device rotates, it seems like seeing the “sparkling sea surface”. She shared: “The love between man and nature is the inheritance of the past and the future.”

The lecture also reviewed JUJUWANG’s series of works “Looking at the Palace” at the 2016 Nanjing Famous Cities Conference. The first installation of “Looking at the Palace” uses 100 mirrored stainless steel blocks. They are stacked layer by layer and rotate up, down, left, and right, reflecting the Linxing Gate of Chaotian Palace and the partial buildings penetrating the Dacheng Palace, making it easier for the audience to pay attention to the architecture. detail. Installation 2 combines modern materials and laser engraving technology to engrave traditional patterns onto acrylic materials. This kind of design can remove colors and materials, leaving only the wisdom of the ancients, allowing the audience to more intuitively and deeply appreciate the beauty of traditional design. She said: “Design is the soul of architecture. If the soul can be extracted and placed in front of us, people will be willing to stay for it.”

During the lecture, JUJUWANG shared the story of her creation of “Gold Foil Screen”, citing “thin as paper, light as feather”. In the flowing liquid, the gold foil that was once designated for royal use travels through time and space, swaying in the modern light and shadow, showing vivid beauty on the transparent screen.

During the audience interaction session, JUJUWANG said: “No work comes out of nowhere.” She believes that using existing experience to interpret artworks will definitely give you a different experience than getting to know the artist first and then seeing his works. . At the same time, JUJUWANG also encourages viewers to try to interpret the works and experience art in different ways when viewing the exhibition.

Finally, Li Zhiquan, Secretary of the Party Branch and Vice President of the Chengdu Art Academy (Chengdu Art Museum), issued a donation certificate to JUJUWANG.

At this point, the lecture also ended with warm applause from the audience.
